CS ADVANCED EDUCATION

CS ADVANCED EDUCATION

Comprehensive Scientific Advanced Education

“The strong take from the weak, but the smart take from the strong.” is the word of basketball coach Pete Carril, but it may apply to all entrepreneurs. The strong exploit the weak in conformity with nature, but the weak can take from the strong if the weak are intelligent (wise men). So how to be a wise man? Yukichi Fukuzawa, a leader of Japanese citizens in the Meiji era, said, “It is said that heaven does not create one man above or below another man. Any existing distinction between the wise and the stupid, between the rich and the poor, comes down to education.” in his essay ‘Gakumon no susume’.

Preface

The CS Advanced Education utilizes these educational pillars to cultivate specialists who will succeed in the new era.

  1. Developing a well-rounded education: An education that clears away any boundaries presently existing between any social or academic disciplines.
  2. Awareness education: Cultivating ability by stimulating the senses.
  3. Humanity: Encouraging education of heartfelt communication between the faculty and the students.
  4. Creative education: Increases the student’s ability to conceptualize.
  5. Independence education: Cultivates the ability for the student to evaluate problems and design solutions him/herself without the lecturer imposing his/her method on the student.

The program provides a well-rounded education to cultivate capable persons rich with humanity and the ability to take over science tomorrow. The students under the CS Advanced Education will be supported by cooperation from all faculties, including the faculty of science and technology, as well as have access to all the resources of the comprehensive university.

Comprehensive Science Project was started to promote Comprehensive Science ideology in 2001. Innovations for Comprehensive Science (ICS) was established to support the Comprehensive Science Project in February 2011

Professor Yoshihiro Shikata created the original ideology of Comprehensive Science.
The Meijo University Comprehensive Scientific Education Center realized his ideology in 2001. He was the first director of the Comprehensive Scientific Education Center. The Comprehensive Scientific Education Center educates enrolled 17 years old high school students called “CS Advanced Education students” with good talent in mathematics under the ideology.
Tatsuhiro Uchida, former assistant professor of the Comprehensive Science Education Center, was executing and developing CS Advanced Education designed for CS Advanced Education students with other center members.
From the beginning of the Comprehensive Science Education Center, some African countries must introduce Comprehensive Science Education into their country because of its ability. Therefore, the center is developing CS Advanced Education to apply to developing countries. Tatsuhiro Uchida and science associates visited Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya and introduced and demonstrated CS Advanced Education.
Comprehensive Science Project in Uganda was started in 2007 by Tatsuhiro Uchida as an overseas researcher at Meijo University with Uganda NGO BSTEP, supported by PAD(Poverty Alleviation Department of Statehouse Uganda) and Great Lake Regional University. After 12 months, he returned to Japan. BSTEP promotes the project yet.
Tatsuhiro Uchida had an excellent counterpart Dr. William Mugisa Kihire, who was an advisor of PAD. They made a basic plan for the Comprehensive Science Project in Uganda.

In January 2011, Tatsuhiro Uchida organized this Comprehensive Science website to develop Comprehensive Science.
In February 2011, He and Dr. William Mugisa Khire founded Innovations for Comprehensive Science, formally.

CS Advanced Education produces true leaders

The era of making a leader’s decision based on intuition and experience was away. Instead, the leader has to be a wise man who forecasts the future and then shows the best way for the organization or citizens using mathematical and scientific methods.

How to be a leader

Train the following lessons;

  1. Leadership qualities have an essential academic ability in mathematics and science.
  2. Preparation to be a leader: training and learning.
  3. Leadership and membership: learn by practices.
  4. Naturally, acquire courtesy and Social graces: get through daily life and conscious activities.

The following are detailed lessons for youth who want to be a leader in Comprehensive Scientific education.

1. Leadership qualities

Twelve years of education has no meaning if they have only knowledge. In this case, they need reconstruction of knowledge. First, confirm that they understand or do not understand what they have learned. Next, it must be verified individually. Finally, they may need clarification about their knowledge’s meaning. For example, a person can differentiate but does not know its meaning. If they know that differentiation expresses the strengths and weakness of swing, they can see an upturn or downturn with its measure in sales.

Furthermore, they know that second-order differentiation expresses momentum, then they can forecast the period for solid sales. There is no end to showing such examples. If they cannot get a good teacher, try to remove the borders of learning. They cannot fully use their knowledge if they stow it into categories, e.g., mathematics, physics, biology, geometry, history, and linguistics. Think about the relationship between humans and things. Think about how artifacts affect nature. Sharpen a custom to move their point of view between Part and Whole, Point, and Long-term. Take an ability to observe in-depth and look down. Observe phenomena not only a point but also a historical span. Think about how to create languages and their functions because language expresses things, and their native language is inherited from their ancestors’ wisdom, philosophy, and culture. Actual knowledge of their native language will help them discover their difference from a foreigner and give them wisdom on negotiating with foreigners on even ground. Notice that a mathematical expression is a language for science and technology. The mathematical expression has the same power as human language.

They can reconstruct their knowledge through the above lessons.

2. Preparation to be a leader

Do training and learning by following the steps.

  1. Find their strong points and weak points. They have to know their ability exactly. The uncertain impression assumption makes failure.
  2. Add to the strength of their weak points. Please remove all of their weak points because an enemy skewers their weak point. Refrain from showing their weak point. Make a complete defense. The person who has complete defense always wins a battle.
  3. Develop their strong points. Please have at least one strong point that wins all their enemies. The strong point may indicate where they should go.
  4. Train how to fly. A wise man carefully does things. A wise man only goes to the battlefield with enough practical experience. Do practical training so that they can cope well with unexpected occurrences. Repeat flight training until they can survey all directions.
  5. Fly and survey an enemy. A survey of where the enemy is and its picture, then find their target. An enemy in this chapter does not mean a business competitor or rival. Their enemy is a problem people have or a challenge to open the way for a promising future.
  6. Defeat an enemy. Do not fight a battle with an enemy that they cannot win. Do not take its toll even if they win the battle. It would help if they worked with an old soldier (professional) and learned strategy and practices.

They can fight as leaders after completing the above six training and learning.

3.  Leadership and membership

A leader has to know not only leadership but also membership. Working with other people or companies is expected because the world’s social situation swings in a large and complicated modern society. A leader is required to work as a member of a consortium in some cases. The achievement scenes of a charismatic leader are a thing of the past. A charismatic leader is exhibitionistic and demands obedience from people, and an excellent member abandons the leader. Members who depend on the leader are left, then fall someday. This is a historical fact. No one helps the exhibitionistic leader who ignores members’ advice even if the organization faces a crisis. A modern leader has to unite members as a leader of an organization. Only the leader who knows about membership can unite. Do not be a dictator. The rule and trust should organize the organization. Strictly apply the rule with incentives and penalties. Making allowances for a penalty by a leader weakens the body.

Following is ‘learning for leadership and membership.’ Make a group that exhibits an event, then work as a member or a leader. Here is an illustration of one science group of youth, BSTEP. BSTEP joined a local women’s community in Mukono District in Uganda and implemented a technic of making cloth bags for the community. After some training, they made some bags and mounted a trade show. One member of BSTEP learned how to work with another organization as a collaborative group member. In this case, he could learn how to manage an organization and its difficulty from the local community’s leader. If they specify marketing, they may teach what kind of bag will come into fashion and how to focus a target on the community’s members. When they learn membership, they set up a project by themselves and manage it as a project leader. Do not set up an impossible project. Successful experiment cultivates leadership. Remember that the community is their teacher.

4. Naturally, acquire courtesy and Social graces

One of the essential qualifications for a leader is ‘Naturally acquire courtesy and Social graces,’ called ‘Reisetsu’ in Japanese. There are two types of trust. One is credit which can get through money. Another is a confidence that only gets through honest activities for at least several years. A company has ups and downs. When failing, a staff resigns, and customers are gone if only connected by money. Confidence is a relationship without money; not only all employees but customers support the leader with full efforts when failing. Japan met several economic crises, such as an economic bubble burst. As a result, almost all surviving companies are socially confidential.

Reisetsu produces confidence. To take Reisetsu, we must learn about Reisetsu and take conscious action of Reisetsu in daily life. Remember that they learned leadership by the grace of the local community in the case of the above example, and keep this spirit. In Japan, we give Comprehensive Science Volunteer Salon, which has the spirit of a European noble salon and gives a chance to learn Reisetsu. They may open a similar volunteer salon by themselves. However, the volunteer salon should consist of common-sense men, scholars, scientists, and youths. They may qualify as a leader when they completely play the role of a coordinator or a facilitator of the volunteer salon.

It takes a long time to be a leader. In Japan, we cultivate leaders by the above method during four years of education, said CS Advanced Education. However, if one takes skill as a true leader, one has to continue high-quality study and training in daily life.

PURPOSES

There are two questions. One is what a true leader is. Another one is what true independence is. The true leader opens the way for the 21st century, which swings in a large and complicated way and leads people in the right direction. True independence is an individual, an organization (community, company) that works without support, or a country that can stand up to developed countries or extraordinary powers. We organized Innovations for Comprehensive Science as an NPO to answer and face these questions. The base activity is a Comprehensive Science project. In Japan, the Comprehensive Scientific Education Center of Meijo University promotes it. In Uganda, Innovations for Comprehensive Science promotes it. Innovations for Comprehensive Science also conducts activities to support youth groups of science that wish to lead science and technology and make an international network of these groups. Why do they support a group, not an individual? Because the reason for the existence of a leader is organization. An excellent place to cultivate is an organization that has the regulation, consists of human resources, and each staff has a role, responsibility, and goal.

MISSIONS

1. Support for group

There is no support for giving a solution; we only give minimal guidance and hints to lead answers. We give information and data if the group requires them for independence. Finally, the group will solve the problem. There is no support for the fund.

Support style

There was juku in Japan, not the modern juku. Youths, who have a strong spirit of independence, met an exceptional teacher, said juku-cho, who was not only a thinker but also a philosopher, strategist, and scientist. Furthermore, they learned his philosophy, had practical discussions, and then grew up to be independent people and work for society. Sometimes, they changed politics and created a new era, e.g., the Meiji period. Innovations for Comprehensive Science is similar to juku. The difference from the original juku organized by one famous juku-cho is that Innovations for Comprehensive Science has some juku-cho, said a CS instructor. Because modern society has a complex structure, and the rapid advance of science and technology made a new situation that needs to be solved by one specialist, even a genius. A juku as an organization, not private, is essential for the sustainability of CS. CS project leaders manage CS as CS instructors. Future CS instructors will be cultivated for the sustainable development of Comprehensive Science.

2. Open juku

3. Provide our know-how

Innovations for Comprehensive Science opens the door for the people who understand its philosophy and favor its activities. To be a true leader, organize a group, and participate in CS Advanced Education.

Translate knowledge to wisdom. Know about themself and shore up a weakness. Make an area specified for them and brush up on their skill. Fly after enough training. Find an enemy with a viewpoint like a bird. Do not fight against a stronger enemy than they. Win the battle without victims. At the same time, get a membership. Learn ‘Naturally acquire courtesy and Social graces.’ These are wise men and processes to be a true leader. 21st century’s true leader is a plain common-sense man, not an eccentric.

Advantages of the CS Advanced Education

In this modern world, countries have interdependency. International relations have to be equal. In particular, to deal with Western nations on an equal footing, we can only catch up with Western civilization if we follow it. How do they do? One of the answers is ‘Escape from Western Civilization.’ There is no true independence, complete freedom, without this escape. The proof of the above answer is seen in the modern history of two crises that Japan met. From the 17th century, Japan kept a policy of isolation for 300 years and created a distinctive Japanese culture, no war and no battle. In the 9th century, Western countries expanded their colonialism to Asia. Japan which had not had any modern weapons, was facing a crisis. This situation is the first crisis. The Japanese government implemented Western civilization to protect Western countries, especially science, technology, education, and culture. All of the Japanese nations learned them desperately. It was assimilation with Japanese culture and Western civilization. Japan had a counterbalancing power to Western countries after dozen years. The nation’s effort defended against an invasion of Western countries. Asian countries that could protect themselves from colonial occupation were only Japan and Thailand. Thailand defended against an invasion of Western countries with its diplomatic power.

Unfortunately, the Japanese government used its national power in East and South East Asia to get natural resources and to occupy Asia. As a corollary, Japan fought against Western countries, including the Soviets. In the First World War, Japan won. 1941, Japan fought against the United States of America and lost the Second World War in 1945 because of the overwhelming abundance of weapons and superior technology of the U.S. All Japanese cities and properties were burned, and many people were killed. Japan had to start from zero with wartime reparation. This situation is the second crisis. After losing the war, U.S. forces occupied Japan and introduced a democratic system, science and technology, the modified education and culture of U.S. style, and the new constitution famous for Japan’s “Peace” Constitution, war-renunciation, did not have any nuclear weapon. The Japanese economy was regenerated, and its technology was developed over 20 years. At the beginning of 21 century, Japan was the second economic power and got a significant share of manufacturing, and many technologies were top of the world. Why did Japan grow up fast and high? If Japan accepted U.S. science, technology, and culture without change, there would be no today’s Japan. There was Japan as a tributary state of the U.S. Japan created a new culture by assimilating the original Japanese culture with over 2000 years of history and Western civilization. As a result, Japan accomplished complete independence.

What is the traditional Japanese culture that protects from Western civilization? The answer is diligence; people have to learn how to survive in the harsh Japanese natural environment, cut waste; required to recycle resources because of poor natural resources, and multivalued logic; Buddhism maybe people live with nature; nature is not an object that human beings control or take hold. Modern ideas, e.g., environmental preservation, biodiversity, recycle are common sense for the Japanese. Japanese had the ideas for at least 400 years.

Being Western is not needed. Westernization is a long way around because Westernization damages the natural environment and causes pollution by the conflict between nature, then begins recycling and environmental conservation movement and repeats the same cycle. To cause damage to the natural environment is an unnecessary activity. After the loss of World War Second, Japan had a bitter experience falling into the above cycle. Avoid the same mistake. Japan needed to have corrected human resources development. Japanese education succeeded in producing a massive amount of bright persons, professionals, and engineers but forgot to cultivate leaders. As a result, many Japanese companies that need more leaders lost to world business competitions. The Japanese government and economic quarters noticed this problem, then requested to make an education program that produced science leaders and execute the program at Meijo University in 2000. This education program is CS Advanced Education. Some African countries, South Africa, Nigeria, Cameroon, Tanzania, and others, wanted to introduce CS Advanced Education. Meijo University tried to implement the “CS Advanced Education in Uganda “Comprehensive Science Project in Uganda,” for 12 months. The above experiences, Japanese know-how, and CS Advanced Education move into Innovations for Comprehensive Science. CS Advanced Education was born as an education program that cultivates leadership on two experiences of the Japanese crisis. Innovations for Comprehensive Science has inherited these experiences and CS Advanced Education.

The advantage of CS Advanced Education is that it has the know-how based on practical experience, which is no one to imitate, to cultivate leadership.

‘Escape from Western Civilization’ is not to put away Western civilization, assimilate with the traditional culture, and create a new civilization and culture by oneself. Thus, create our identity and become independent.

Curriculum

Four basic recognitions model

We use five keywords, Mathematical, Linguistic, Information, Technology, and Philosophy, and combine these words with unusual meanings, that are,

  1. A person imports the outside world as “Information” into his/her inside world,
  2. There are two types of import methods; Linguistic and Mathematical,
  3. A person analyses the imported information he/she has taken in based on experiences, then consolidates and theorizes these common structures or differences. Through this process, a person grasps and understands the outside world and constructs his/her “Philosophy” for action guidelines.
  4. When a constructed theory has availability and versatility, it will be Learning, and its encouragement on the outside world is Technology.

The Comprehensive Science curriculum is made up of four basic recognition models.

The Philosophy of the CS Advanced Education Curriculum

Providing a curriculum that is a reorganized fragmented course of study under the comprehensive view with a new vision and guide to students strongly enhances the effectiveness of students’ motivation. The effectiveness doubled if we concretely show the relationship between the real world and learning through experiences. This education called a “curriculum that emphasizes experiment and seminar,” indicates a sense of reality. This sense of reality is not obtained by experiment and practice in a textbook, got by physical experience, e.g., by departing camera and radio and then reconstructing them again.

Curriculum model

The CS Advanced Education students take the CS Advanced Education Seminar in addition to the general curriculum. This seminar is the core of CS Education and consists of the CS Basic Course and the CS Advanced Course.

Through these seminars, students learn to take an open-minded view of modern science not to be bound by the conventional framework of science. Students will discover and pursue their studies individually.

CS Volunteer Salon

The Salon aims to provide an opportunity to acquire courtesy and social grace naturally.

Acquiring knowledge and learning problem-solving are not the only requirements for becoming capable individuals who will be champions in the future. To adequately demonstrate one’s knowledge and problem-solving to the community, one must learn courtesy and social grace.

Comprehensive Science education places importance on this point and therefore has set up the Comprehensive Science Volunteer Salon to give students opportunities to acquire courtesy and social grace naturally. The Salon consists of faculty members and their families, high-school teachers, other fully-fledged members of society, people similarly involved at other universities, and so on.

Like a clubhouse, it can be likened to a club activity, and students in the CS Advanced Education venture in and out of the salon daily. The Comprehensive Science Volunteer Salon is available for mingling with various people and will be a place of importance and meaning, especially in broadening the student’s viewpoint.

Fully equipped facilities to support research (the case of the institute)

To accommodate various research themes, the Comprehensive Science Volunteer Salon is fully equipped with experimental equipment and computers.

Various activities are conducted in the salon while interacting with people from multiple fields.

The seminars and conversations mentioned below are held at the Volunteer Salon and are referred to as SALON and can be attended by students in the CS Advanced Education.

Comprehensive Science Seminar

Mathematical thinking ability is cultivated through actively introducing experiments. It is a compulsory subject for students in CS Advanced Education. It opens every Saturday.

Conversation

Lecturers from various fields are invited, such as faculty members from other universities, other fully-fledged members of society, and others, once or twice a month to listen and exchange opinions.

Research Study Meeting

Different research unique to the SALON and joint research with industrial groups and other universities is held. For example, the following theme, “What are the Brain Information processing differences between Japanese and foreigners,” was studied using an eye-making recorder, an apparatus capable of recording human visual points.

Various Seminars

Children’s science and holiday seminars are held for primary and secondary school students. Children can learn by experiencing the fun of science by themselves.
